Overall Rating: ★★★★★

There’s something undeniably delightful about indulging in fresh seafood, and blue crabs are a beloved favorite for many seafood enthusiasts. They’re known for their sweet, succulent meat and are often enjoyed in a variety of dishes, from crab cakes to crab boils to gumbo. Recently, we had the opportunity to try out Walmart’s Louisiana blue crabs, and in this review, We’ll share our thoughts on the quality, flavor, and overall experience of purchasing and preparing them.

Purchasing Experience: ★★★★☆

One of the key factors when it comes to seafood is the freshness and quality of the product. When we visited our local Walmart, we were pleasantly surprised to find a well-stocked seafood section with a variety of options, including blue crabs.

The blue crabs were found in the seafood section tucked away at the bottom of a freezer. They looked good so we figured we’d give it a try. Whether you’re planning a seafood feast for a family gathering or just want a small portion to treat yourself, they’ve got you covered.

Quality and Appearance: ★★★★☆

We purchased two packs of blue crabs. Each pack included four crabs each. The crab are already fully cooked so they are red in color and not blue. From what we could see through the package; they were plump and had a vibrant red hue, which is a good indicator of freshness. It’s essential to choose crabs that appear healthy, and Walmart seemed to meet this standard.

To be honest, when we got home, we got 2 different qualities of crab based on their appearance. One bag of crab (mostly female) was free from any noticeable blemishes or off-putting odors, further reinforcing their quality. The other bag had crabs ( mostly male) with a few blemishes and dark spots that made it less than ideal to take pictures. However, both types of crab tasted just fine so don’t worry if you open the pack and don’t like what you see at first.

Flavor and Cooking: ★★★★★

The true test of any seafood product is in the taste, so we couldn’t wait to get home and prepare these blue crabs. We decided to steam them like the package suggested, which is a popular method for cooking blue crabs to retain their natural sweetness. We laid them in our steamer pot, which you can find a similar one here.

The crabs were easy to open and prepare, and within minutes, they were in the steamer. It didn’t take long for the delightful aroma of steaming crab to fill the kitchen, building our anticipation. We also decided to do the garlic butter recipe on the back of the package and boy are we glad we did!

The result was fantastic. The meat of Walmart’s blue crab was sweet and tender and the sauce took it to another dimension, exactly what you would expect from high-quality blue crabs. Each bite was a burst of delicious seafood flavor, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the experience. We were worried that the meat would be mushy due to the freezing and thawing process but after following the directions to a T, they came out perfect!

Value for Money: ★★★★★

Another important aspect of any review is value for money. Walmart’s blue crabs were competitively priced. The pack of 4 was slightly over $13 at the time of this review. Making them an affordable option for seafood lovers. Given the quality and taste of the crabs, We felt like we got excellent value for our purchase and we would definitely buy again.

Conclusion: ★★★★★

We would rate our overall blue crab experience a 5 out of 5 stars. Our experience with Walmart’s blue crabs was overwhelmingly positive. The purchasing process was convenient, the quality of the crabs was impressive, and the flavor was outstanding (especially the sauce). Whether you’re a seasoned seafood aficionado or trying blue crabs for the first time, Walmart’s blue crabs are definitely worth considering for your next seafood feast.

It’s important to note that seafood availability and quality may vary by location and season, so it’s always a good idea to check with your local Walmart for the most up-to-date information. Nevertheless, based on my experience, I can confidently say that Walmart’s blue crabs have earned a place on my list of go-to easy and convenient seafood options.
